There are many different window options for pole barns that help make these buildings as unique their owners. Understanding what pole barn window options are available ahead of time can help you better plan for the architectural design of your build.
With so many window styles, colors and features to consider for your build, it’s important to have a knowledgeable pole barn contractor who can help you navigate the design and build process while remaining on-time and on-budget.
What Types of Windows Can You Add to Your Pole Barn?
While there are many different types of windows that can be installed in a pole barn, the four most popular windows in pole building construction are sliding, single-hung, double-hung and picture windows.
Sliding Windows
The most commonly installed window in a pole barn is a sliding window. Sliding windows are fixtures that open horizontally on a track, featuring one fixed pane and one (or two) panes that glide over it. Many people choose to install sliding windows in their pole barns because these windows are best used in spaces where the width is greater than the height.
Single- or Double-hung Windows
These windows are seen in many buildings throughout the United States, with single-hung windows dating all the way back to the 17th century. Single-hung windows operate using a fixed top sash and operable bottom sash that glides vertically over top. By contrast, both sashes in a double-hung window are operable. These classic window options are a great choice for those seeking to bring timeless elegance and long-lasting functionality to their pole barn homes.
Picture Windows
Another great window option for pole barns is the picture window: These unique windows come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Picture windows are inoperable, meaning they won’t open to provide increased ventilation. However, what they lack in improved airflow they more than make up for in natural light and interesting design. This window type is a popular choice for those who want to add a unique fixture to the drop from their main roof to the lean-to, in the gable or even under the eaves of their roof.
Special Window Considerations for Your Pole Building
Pole barn window options get more specific than simply choosing the style: You also need to consider its size, placement, glass material and color.
Window Size
How big your windows are will directly impact the architectural design of your pole barn. It’s important to take this into consideration during the design phase of your build. In general, the following window sizes are the most popular to include in a pole building:
- Sliding Windows: 4’ wide x 3’ high
- Single- or Double-hung Windows: 3’ wide x 5’ high
- Picture Windows: 4’ wide x 2’ high
Window Placement
As aforementioned, some may choose to strategically place windows in specific areas to create a unique aesthetic. This is where it becomes especially helpful to coordinate with a knowledgeable pole barn builder. Your design professional can help you understand what architectural elements need to be added to achieve your design specifications. For instance, placing a picture window in the gable is possible; however, it requires a special pole barn truss to prevent the wood behind the window from being seen. This added element might increase the price of your window installation, but it’s well worth the money for the character it adds to the final product!
Window Glass
The type of glass used in your window panes directly impacts its efficiency. Higher efficiency, Low-E glass coatings may be more expensive up-front, but can provide you with continued energy savings down the road. If it’s aesthetic appeal you’re worried about, you also have the option to include rain glass in your window design to add a point of intrigue in your pole barn home.
