Starting a pole building project? One of the first things people ask is, “How long will it take?” The timeline can vary based on a few factors, but with good planning and teamwork, your pole barn can be finished smoothly and on time. Here’s a simple breakdown of what to expect along the way.
1. Contracting Phase: 2 to 4 Weeks
The contracting phase is the first step in your pole building journey. It involves initial consultation with our Sales Manager, estimating the cost of your building, and a site visit on the building property. During these meetings, we go over your needs and budget, finalize the design, accessories, and colors, and agree on the scope of your project. The goal is to capture every detail of your building, so there are no surprises later on.
2. Plans and Engineering: 4 to 8 Weeks
After the contract is signed, the next step is drafting and engineering. This phase involves working closely with our Plans and Permitting Manager, who will send your building sketch to our drafter to create detailed plans that meet your specifications. Once your preliminary plans are approved, they are sent to the engineer who finalizes the plans making sure they are compliant with local building codes. Plans and engineering can take anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the complexity of the project and how many revisions are made.
3. Building Permitting: 4 to 8 Weeks
Once you have your final plans, it’s time to apply for a building permit from your governing authority (city or county). Our team at Beehive Buildings has years of experience in navigating Utah’s regulations, which significantly helps streamline the process. With residential accessory buildings, we take care of the permitting process for you. In Utah, the permitting process can vary depending on your location and the intended use of the building which can make the permitting time line about 4 to 8 weeks.
4. Site Preparation: 1 to 2 Weeks
Before construction can begin, the site needs to be properly prepared. This includes clearing the area, leveling the ground, to make sure that the site is ready for the building process. Site preparation typically takes about 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the size of the structure and the condition of the land. Starting site prep as early as possible helps to avoid any potential delays, especially in areas with challenging terrain or during seasons when the weather can be unpredictable.
After the site is prepped, and about 4 to 6 weeks before construction begins, our Project Manager will schedule a time to meet you on-site to do a site inspection. They will check the pad prep and excavation, stake the site, and set a location for staging of materials. Materials then start arriving two weeks before your construction start date.
6. Construction: 6 to 8 Weeks
The construction phase is where your pole building starts to take shape. Depending on the size and complexity of your project, construction can take anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks. Simpler structures might be completed in just a few weeks, while more complex and large buildings take longer. During construction, our skilled and experienced team at Beehive Buildings will set the poles, pour cement floors, and build your structure with the highest standards and commitment to quality.
7. Final Walk Through & Inspections: 1 to 2 Weeks
After construction is completed, the final phase involves a walk through and inspection. Our Project Manager will come do a final walk-through to check that everything is to your satisfaction and schedule a final inspection of the building. Local building authorities inspect the completed structure to ensure it meets all safety and code requirements. This typically takes about 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the responsiveness of local inspectors. Once the inspections are completed and any necessary adjustments are made, your pole barn is ready for use!
8. Total Project Timeline: 18 to 24 Weeks
How long it takes to build your pole barn can depend on things like the design, permits, and weather. Getting started early helps keep things on budget, on time, and exactly how you want it.
