When Alicia started planning her workshop in Mantua, Utah, she had two things in mind: a functional space for quilting and a place where her family, especially her grandkids, could hang out and make memories. The result, lovingly nicknamed “Grandma’s Bougie Barn,” is a custom pole building that blends creativity, comfort, and connection.
Designed to Be Used (and Enjoyed)

This 24′ × 40′ × 20′ workshop features an earthy exterior palette with Colony Green siding, Evergreen roofing, Sandstone doors, and Clay trim, a timeless combination that fits right into its surroundings. The main level gives Alicia dedicated space for her quilting machine, plenty of open workspace, and lots of natural light. It’s comfortable, functional, and set up to support her day-to-day projects.

Up in the loft, Alicia added one of the most fun personal touches. SwissTrax flooring laid out in a chessboard pattern gives her grandkids a place to play life-size chess and spend time together. It’s a small detail that adds personality and turns the loft into a true hangout spot.

Outside, the 12′ lean-to, split between open and enclosed sections, extends the workshop even further. From BBQs to shaded hangouts, it creates an easy transition between indoor and outdoor space and makes the building just as enjoyable outside as it is in.
Built with Real Life in Mind

Beyond the layout and personal touches, the details of this build were chosen to keep the space comfortable, durable, and easy to maintain over time. Nothing overdone, just solid features that support how the workshop is actually used:
- Full electrical throughout to support equipment, lighting, and everyday projects
- Two insulated overhead doors, including a wide 18′ × 10′ door
- R-19 insulation in the walls and roof to help regulate temperature year-round
- A 4″ concrete slab with an epoxy finish that holds up to daily use and cleans up easily
A Space That Brings People Together
From quilting projects to grandkid chess matches and backyard BBQs, Alicia’s barn was built to be lived in. It’s a great example of how a custom workshop can support what you love and who you love, all in one space.
Inspired by Alicia’s Build?
One of the best parts of projects like this is seeing how personal they can be. Alicia’s workshop wasn’t designed to check boxes. It was built around how she actually wanted to use the space, from quilting days to family hangouts and everything in between.
